The existing 435 SF unfinished basement of this Ravenna residence had a low ceiling and was only partially excavated. To create an 865 SF two-bedroom ADU, the remainder of the basement level was excavated, thereby doubling the available floor area. Lifting the house allowed for a comfortable 8’ ceiling height to be established and accommodated the installation of large windows in the ADU’s main living areas and in both bedrooms.
While the owners’ main goal in constructing this ADU was to generate income through short-term rentals, the renovation also provided the opportunity to improve the quality and efficiency of their own living areas by relocating the existing dysfunctional interior staircases and stacking them in a new addition at the rear of the house.
