I AM AIA

Scott Melbourne AIA

I am dedicated to designing inspired landscapes that bring communities together while strengthening ties between individuals and their environment. During the past two decades, I have contributed to a range of park, university, urban mixed-use, and hospitality projects for public and private clients alike. My award-winning teaching has explored the potential for design to inform decision-making in developing regions of Southeast Asia. After a decade overseas, I returned to the Pacific Northwest to co-found MxM Landscape Architecture in 2021. I am the author of Refining Nature: The Landscape Architecture of Peter Walker, published by Birkhäuser.

I joined AIA Seattle…

To connect with a wider range of professionals, supporting and learning from each other as we strive to realize positive change in our communities.

What relationships have I created?

My design career began more than 25 years ago, and I’m constantly reminded of how essential our relationships really are.

My favorite Seattle-area structure is…

The topographic structure of Gas Works Park.

I explain what I do for a living as…

“Shaping landscapes of craft and integrity that strengthen our civic infrastructure” is how my business partner Brice and I like to describe it! Or.. I design parks.

Today I was inspired by…

Meeting face-to-face with clients who are taking immediate steps toward long-term goals of improving their communities.

Do I believe design can save the world?

It can move the needle, at least a bit.
