Behind the Vision: Community Reuse of Items from the Center for Architecture & Design

The partner organizations of the Center for Architecture & Design (CfAD) have been preparing to exit our shared space for multiple years, and the decommissioning at 1010 Western is nearly complete. As the needs of each partner organization’s space have evolved over time, our values have remained steadfast, including our shared belief in responsible reuse.

With appreciation for the many committed and dedicated volunteers of multiple organizations who came together to open the Center, it is fitting that all of the items so thoughtfully procured have found new homes, with mission aligned nonprofit and community organizations whose stakeholders will enjoy years of additional use.

Architects Without Borders Seattle (AWB-S) is a mission-based organization whose volunteers collaborate with underserved communities to design and implement ecologically sensitive, culturally appropriate, life-changing projects.

AWB-S will use the book collection from CfAD to fuel their mission through their annual used Architecture and Design book sale, giving books a new lease on life and raising funds. If you have books to donate for their sale, please reach out.

AWB-S provides architectural services, and acts as a true community connector, through their deep relationships with volunteers and community members in Seattle and around the world. Executive Director Stephen Yamada-Heidner recognized the value of items at CfAD for the community organizations they’re engaged with in the Seattle Area.

One of these community organizations is Cherry Street Village, an interfaith social justice arts collective, who has been steadily refurbishing a nearly 100-year-old building designed by Benjamin Marcus Priteca FAIA, a Jewish-American architect best known for designing theatres for Alexander Pantages. In 1980 the Islamic School of Seattle purchased the building and today it houses the progressive Cherry Street Mosque and the Cherry St. Village.

Cherry Street Village will be using the office furniture, A/V equipment, and conference furniture from the Center to support the local and greater Seattle community who use their shared space. The collective includes multiple community groups such as Salaam Cultural MuseumDunya Theater ProductionsKadima Reconstructionist CommunityMiddle East Peace Camp and the Cherry Street Mosque. Cherry Street Village is a living demonstration of how physical space not only reflects but builds community:

We are building not only this space, but a vibrant and hopeful community. Many of the Cherry Street Village community organizations cannot afford space elsewhere or on their own. The items from CfAD will be used in our classroom and meeting spaces, for movie viewings, and community gatherings. These items are of a quality and value beyond what we could purchase, and will have many years of use by all who gather in the Village.Samia El-Moslimany

Beyond donations, CfAD partners have worked to decommission materials from the space with many of the vendors who performed the original install. The donor wall, promised as a benefit for the first five years of occupancy to generous donors who made the opening of CfAD possible, is an example. All materials are having branding removed and will be reused for other projects.
