COTE: Highrise Multifamily & Energy Efficiency
Market demand for high-rise multifamily buildings in Seattle is high. In 2018 alone, more than 10,000 high-rise residential units were built or approved to be built throughout downtown Seattle, South Lake Union and First Hill, with high-rise multifamily units accounting for a significant percentage of these dwellings. How will the continued evolution of the Seattle Energy Code (SEC), updated every three years, impact the near future design and construction of this building type? What energy strategies can be implemented to meet future code compliance and reach a carbon neutral Seattle? What does energy efficiency look like beyond 2030?
Join Myer Harrell of Weber Thompson and Alexandra Ramsden and Eric Vander Mey of Rushing as they explore answers to these question from the recent white paper: “Pursuing High-Rise Multifamily Energy Efficiency in Seattle.” This study, co-authored by Rushing and Weber Thompson, sheds light on the future of Seattle high-rise multifamily energy efficiency, and narrows and prioritizes the best practices to be aware of when planning future developments of this type. The collaboration on this white paper recognizes the integrative design necessary between engineers and architects for successful performing buildings.
Speakers:
Myer Harrell – Myer is a principal and director of sustainability at Weber Thompson. He believes in the power of design to promote a sustainable future and directs the firm’s initiatives to that end. Myer is a leader in Weber Thompson’s commercial office group, with two projects pursuing Living Building Petal Certification, including Watershed completing construction in January 2020.
Alexandra Ramsden – Alexandra is a principal at Rushing and director of sustainability, energy, and commissioning teams. She guides these teams in providing commissioning; energy analyses; energy code compliance; Net-0 energy; sustainability strategy development; LEED, Living Building Challenge, and Built Green consulting and verification; charrette facilitation; and other related services.
Eric Vander Mey – Eric is a principal at Rushing and leads Rushing’s mechanical engineering team. He is currently a representative on the City of Seattle Construction Codes and Advisory Board and the Washington State Building Code Council.
