Architectural Experience Program

The Architectural Experience Program (AXP, formerly IDP), administered by NCARB, identifies the comprehensive experience that is essential for the independent practice of architecture.

AXP includes four categories that design professionals must earn experience in:

  • Pre-Design
  • Design
  • Project Management
  • Practice Management

You can begin earning AXP credit while enrolled in architecture school or once you are working in an architecture firm. Learn more about when you can get started, how to document your experience, and additional resources to guide you through the internship process on the NCARB website.

Emerging Professional’s Companion

The Emerging Professional’s Companion (EPC) is an online resource developed by AIA and NCARB for interns to gain AXP credit. The EPC can also be used by educators, ARE® candidates, young architects, and firms to enhance or create new learning opportunities.

The EPC contains seventeen chapters that align with the experience categories and areas of NCARB’s Architectural Experience Program (AXP). The EPC chapters are available in interactive PDF format for an improved user experience.
