Environmental Works Community Design Center is seeking an Architect/Project Manager with 12-20 years’ experience to be a member of our collaborative, community-focused, design team. This position will be focused on the renovation and rehabilitation of affordable, multi-family housing.

Environmental Works is a nonprofit Community Design Center that provides architectural design services throughout Washington State. Our work includes affordable housing, community facilities, childcare centers, shelters, accessible renovations, and community engagement in which social, economic and environmental design are the primary focus.

Qualifications:
- 12-20 years of professional architecture experience including demonstrated leadership of complex projects.
- Proven experience managing multiple projects simultaneously with occasional director oversight.
- Experience with rehabilitation, renovation or adaptive reuse projects, including work within existing buildings, historic structures, and occupied facilities. Experience with rehab affordable housing projects is a plus.
- Strong understanding of existing building conditions, investigative processes, and integration of new systems within existing structures.
- Experience navigating code compliance for existing buildings, including familiarity with IEBC or similar frameworks.
An interest in, or experience with, building upgrades for energy efficiency is desirable. - Experience with coordination between specifications and drawings, ensuring alignment between drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency in Revit and architectural documentation; strong understanding of full project lifecycle (feasibility through construction administration).
- Deep knowledge of building codes, zoning regulations, permitting processes and consultant coordination.
- Demonstrated experience managing project budgets, schedules and client relationships.
- Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to mentor and manage teams of varying sizes.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Lead projects independently through all phases, from concept through construction administration, with occasional Director oversight.
- Serve as primary client contact, building and maintaining strong, trusted client relationships.
- Develop, manage and maintain project schedules, budgets, and scopes; identify risks and implement course corrections as needed.
- Oversee and coordinate internal teams and external consultants, ensuring alignment with project goals and deliverables.
- Delegate tasks effectively, provide clear direction and ensure accountability across project team.
- Overseen production of high-quality deliverables across all phases, including SD, DD CD and permitting sets.
- Support and/or lead construction administration activities, including RFI’s, submittals, site visits, and issue resolution.
- Provide technical leadership on rehabilitation projects, including detailing, material selection and constructability within existing conditions.

- Interest in sustainable design practices, especially as applied to reuse and lifecycle extension of buildings.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, coordinated work
- Experience with community-centered participatory design.

- Salary range for this position: $95,000-$115,000/year
- Base medical, vision, disability, and life insurance are 100% employer paid for employee only coverage. Where available, plan upgrades and dependent coverage are paid by employee. Employer contributes to minor dependent medical coverage if they are enrolled on our plan.
- Voluntary dental insurance is available, employer pays 30% of employee only premiums.
- Flexible paid time off of up to 5 weeks per year – our benefit is lumped into one accrual (including sick, vacation and holiday) and can be used at the employee’s discretion.
- 403b Retirement with 3% employer match. Employer match is vested 20% after each year and fully vested after 5 years.
- Support for licensure exams, continuing education, professional membership dues, and licensure fees.
- Flexible work location and hours, expected in office times for meetings and collaboration.
- Orca pass paid in full by employer.
- Supplemental pay during Washington Paid Family & Medical Leave.
