2024 Honor Award Winners

Congrats to all the 2024 Honor Award for Washington Architecture Projects!

AIA Seattle hosted the 75th annual Honor Awards for Washington Architecture on Monday, November 4th, at Town Hall Seattle to celebrate excellence in design. The distinguished jury included:

From 118 submissions, the jury chose 17 award winners from three submission categories – Built, Conceptual, and Research & InnovationThe jury was impressed with our design community’s wide range of project typologies that are beautifully crafted but that also show a clear commitment to civic action and working towards an affordable and just city and region. They found the craft and restraint anchoring all typologies refreshing and appreciated the profound sense of place, with projects engaging their sites in a beautifully responsible way.

In addition to the main juried awards, it was the seventh year of the Young Voices Selection (YVS), a program with the aim to engage and elevate the voices of young designers through direct participation and representation in the Honor Awards. The three YVS panelists, Fiki Falola (Olson Kundig), Xio Alvarez (LMN Architects), and Ye Sun (Schemata Workshop), selected 1 Built project as the Young Voices Selection winner.

Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to our esteemed jury, moderator, and Honor Awards Committee! All of this would not have been possible without you.

AWARD OF HONOR

Park Home in Ravenna by Kejia Zhang & Xiaoxi Jiao revitalizes a historic home situated on one of the most festive streets of Seattle, Candy Cane Lane, and mastered-planned in 1922 by architect Carl Gould, the founder of the UW Architecture Department. The project was designed to accommodate multi-generational living while maintaining its connection to the community and the nearby Ravenna Park and Park Home Circle.

Porchlight Men’s Shelter by BLOCK Architects is the first emergency shelter for men in Bellevue, which accommodates 100 beds for those living unhoused. By allowing the building to become a canvas through natural lighting, outdoor green spaces, thoughtful details, warm textures, and places to gather, the project erased the idea of it being a shelter completely. Instead, it gave reason for the residents and community to connect through the power of art.

Matt’s Place 2.0 by The Miller Hull Partnership, LLP is a prefabricated, modular, mass timber, single-family home prototype, designed to meet the unique needs of patients and families navigating the challenges of an Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis. The separation of zones for patients and for family members or caretakers allows them to stay with their families while ensuring their dignity by providing their own space.

New U.S. Embassy, Guatemala City, Guatemala by The Miller Hull Partnership, LLP emphasizes the important diplomatic relationship between the United States and Guatemala and provides the first impression for all Guatemalans planning to visit the country. The design of the office building dually represents both countries, as it emerges from the ground plane as two complementary bars – a stone base and a glass tower, an homage to Mayan architecture and the optimistic, diplomatic relationship between Guatemala and the United States.

Longbranch by mwworks transforms a previously logged and altered property on Key Peninsula into a harmonious family home that celebrates its natural surroundings. Designed to blend with the landscape, the home features rustic materials and an innovative structure that allows the forest and meadow to coexist, providing a serene environment for the family and their foster dogs.

ENERGY IN DESIGN AWARD

Founders Hall, Foster School of Business by LMN Architects seamlessly integrates into the campus landscape and strengthens the connection to the historic heart of the university, Denny Yard. Designed for the expanding undergraduate program, Founders Hall offers many social spaces designed to enhance the academic experience and foster networking opportunities with alumni and industry leaders. The project is a new social hub on campus and demonstrates the university’s commitment to climate change, social justice, and education’s positive impact in the world.

Special thanks to the University of Washington Integrated Design Lab (IDL) and sponsor BetterBricks for their partnership on the Energy in Design Award.
