Code Download | Energy Code

This is the fourth session in the 2025 Code Download Series presented by AIA Seattle’s Code Committee.

This two-day virtual training provides a comprehensive overview of commercial energy code requirements and compliance strategies, with a focus on building envelope, mechanical systems, energy modeling, and sustainable design. The session will address the Energy Code in a broader sense, focusing on the current 2021 IECC, as well as the Washington and Seattle Commercial Energy Codes, and will also touch on the upcoming 2024 code adoption. It will guide attendees through both the regulatory framework and practical implementation of energy-efficient and sustainable building practices. Attendees will gain valuable knowledge to support code-compliant, energy-efficient design and construction.

Day 1 focuses on the building envelope and energy credits, covering code requirements, compliance pathways, and sustainable design strategies including embodied carbon and electric readiness. The day concludes with a  Q&A portion for deeper engagement.

Day 2 shifts to mechanical systems, solar integration, EV infrastructure, and energy modeling, offering insights into emerging technologies and compliance tools. The session wraps up with a panel discussion to explore real-world applications and challenges.

Join us online on October 28 and October 29 (12-2pm each day) for Code Download | Energy Code (4 LU/HSW). Register below and look for information regarding online event access in your confirmation email.

This is a 2-day program. Participants must attend the live webinars both days in order to receive continuing education credit or a certificate of completion. No partial credit will be awarded. All registration and credit questions can be directed to Riyansha Goyal.

Meet the Speakers

David Norris is a principal mechanical engineer with over 14 years of experience in mechanical HVAC system design. At Aqua Air Engineering, he leads mechanical design teams for commercial buildings, decarbonization strategies, and innovation in energy systems. David has delivered successful projects in retrofits, hospitals, restaurants, and residential, focusing on performance optimization, cost efficiency, safety, and compliance with codes. He is an active member of ASHRAE and has contributed to the ASHRAE tall buildings technical committee as secretary and vice chair. In this session, David will share key insights on strategies for incorporating renewal energy and smart tech into building mechanical systems. Attendees will gain practical strategies on navigating energy codes and implementing emerging technologies into the building space.

Katya Bautista is an Associate at BEE and currently leads the Energy team as Energy Department Manager. She specializes in thermal envelope analysis and Energy Code compliance, and she works with architects, engineers, developers, and builders to deliver energy code reviews, thermal envelope calculations, and energy modeling for code compliance and sustainability programs. In addition, Katya is a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) who is passionate about delivering high-performance, energy-efficient building solutions. Before joining BEE Engineers, Katya worked at Puget Sound Energy as an Engineering Assistant in the Gas Design Distribution System Department, supporting gas system design and compliance. Earlier in her career, she spent six years as a Design Engineer at NAFTAN in Belarus and two years as a Heating Engineer at Brest Boiler Economy. Katya earned her degree in Thermotechnical Engineering from the Belarusian National Technical University. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking and camping with her family and Doberman.

Kjell practices architecture and serves as a Principal and the Director of Sustainable Design at LMN Architects, working with all of LMN’s clients to set and exceed sustainable design goals. He wrote the first architect-centered book on energy modeling, co-authored AIA’s first policy statement on climate change, led the development of the Path To Zero Carbon series and has spoken extensively on energy, water, materials, and embodied carbon. He founded the Seattle Hub of the Carbon Leadership Forum, served on the AIA National Committee on the Environment and currently serves on the Washington State Building Code Council where he chairs the Energy Code Technical Advisory Group. A lifelong Washingtonian, he lives in Seattle with his wife and two daughters and enjoys playing music and soccer.
