Wild Tensions: Tips and Tricks to Safely Experience the Outdoors

Please join us for an hour-long presentation with Richard Forbes of REI as we explore how gear developments and best practices can help us both keep ourselves comfortable and protect our wilderness for future generations.

Humans have voyaged into the backcountry for thousands of years to find adventure and solitude. And while the outdoor community historically learned to create their own equipment or use military surplus and heavy hunting gear, the last few decades have seen an incredible increase in technical outdoor gear. Adventurous designers and engineers have now applied cutting-edge manufacturing techniques to outdoor sports, and at the same time (and potentially as a result), outdoor participation has skyrocketed. This increase in visitors can imperil the delicate places we visit. But when we use the right gear in the right way, we can protect both ourselves and the wild spaces we love to visit.
