Joe Mayo, Assoc. AIA, received the AIA Seattle Emerging Professionals Travel Scholarship in 2011 for his proposal, “Timber City.” Through this scholarship, Mayo researched the environmental and carbon impacts of wood construction, and its use in mid-rise and high-rise buildings in England, Norway, Germany and Austria, using his findings to make recommendations on how to better harness the carbon mitigation benefits of wood construction in Washington. He is currently practicing architecture in the Pacific Northwest where he concentrates on materiality, technology and form for a regionally-appropriate building culture.
His book, Solid Wood: Mass Timber Architecture, Technology and Design, is the first detailed book which allows readers to understand new mass timber / mass wood architecture. It highlights the most ambitious education, hospitality, industrial, multi-family, and wood office buildings in the world, examining design strategies, construction details, and unique cultural attitudes in wood design that make these structures truly outstanding.
