Small Firm Management Workshop Series – Best Laid Plans: Business Planning for Small Firm Architects

In this 3-part Small Firm Workshop Series, Rena M. Klein and her colleagues at Charrette Venture Group will offer foundational knowledge, strategies, tools and resources for successful small firm management. Ideal for small firm architects and owners, these highly interactive half-day sessions will include informative presentations, case study examples, workshop activities and ample time for peer-to-peer discussion.

SESSION 1: Best Laid Plans: Business Planning for Small Firm Architects

Managing a small design firm has always presented challenges. While small firms have the potential to maximize creativity and enthusiasm, they can also suffer from uneven workloads, poor productivity, and lack of available resources. These difficulties have only increased as unpredictability has intensified and the pace of change has quickened. Given these conditions, how can firm owners plan ahead and have any level of certainty about the future? We will explore strategies for business planning and management within an environment of unpredictability, including case studies illustrating best practices. Topics covered include basic business plan components, financial pro forma development, organizational design, and how to create and implement strategic action plans.
