NEW DATE 8/23 - Mass Timber – Yakama Nation Forest Tour

Join the Mass Timber Committee for an all day tour of Yakama forests near White Swan, WA. The tour will be led by Yakama Nation Tribal Forestry Staff.

Learning objectives:

Please join us for a tour of the Yakama Nation Forests near White Swan, WA. The tour will consist of visits to a series of sites within forests managed by the Yakama Nation and will discuss elements of the Forest Management Plan related to sustainability and responsible sourcing for timber and other forest products. The program’s goal is to manage the forest for current and future generations. This includes goals for cultural/historic + water quality + forest health + fisheries/wildlife + old growth + revenue/employment. The program also wants to increase the fire resiliency of the forest ecosystems with a variety of tools including thinning forests and strategic fire burns.

“The Mission of the [Yakama Nation] Forest Development Program is to protect, preserve and enhance the natural resources of the Yakama Nation, in accordance with the YN Land and Natural Resources Policy Plan, YN Forest Management Plan, P.L. 101-630 and the P.L. 93-638 Contract of the Forest Development Program. The Forest Development Program coordinates with the BIA Branch of Forestry and the YN Natural Resource Programs to provide services of the Yakama Nation that will insure for the maintenance and enhancement of Yakama Nation forest lands. The program is divided into various units that include forest development, fuels management, fee land timber sales, Mt. Adams recreation and campground maintenance.” (source)

Logistics:

The tour will be all day Friday from 9:00 AM to about 5:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to stay over in the area on Thursday and/or Friday nights. Tour organizers can assist attendees in identifying local overnight accommodation options for those interested.

Please arrive at the Yakama Nation Tribal Forestry Forest Development by 9:00am (address below). We will then consolidate cars to drive to the forest locations. Most cars will be from the Yakama Nation hosts. If you prefer to drive your own car it must be high clearance and registered ahead of time (please contact masstimber@aiaseattle.org).

  • PPE: Construction or hiking boots for walking in the forest
  • Accessibility:  Carpooling options are available. Please email masstimber@aiaseattle.org if you are interested in carpooling or if you have any specific accessibility needs.
  • COVID Safety:  Masks are optional, as a demonstration of community care

  • AIA CE: We have asked the AIA for 6 CE HSW for this event. We will inform attendees if this is accepted.
