Code Dependent: Resilience - Rebound or Rebuild
This is the third session in the Code Dependent series.
Resiliency is more than just disaster preparedness and mitigation of effects. Material and design choices affect your facility’s response to extreme events but also have effects upon the building occupants and the community whether an event occurs or not. In a very practical sense, resiliency involves designing for the community of fifty years from now as well as the extreme weather event of this winter or the earthquake of some unknown future date. In this half-day seminar, we will discuss a more “panoramic” approach to building and community design for resiliency. We will discuss traditional hazard preparedness and mitigation but surround these with topics that support and help in the creation of resilient buildings and communities.
Everyone in the AEC industry has a part to play in providing resilient facilities. This seminar reviews some of the tools, resources and rating systems available to help in that process. The design strategy taken and material and system choices you make affect the ability of users and facilities to rebound after an event. We will review some of the choices you can make to build a more resilient community.
This program takes place in a wheelchair-accessible facility, with a zero-step entrance via elevator on Third Avenue, or off the street on Fourth Avenue. Bathrooms are accessible, as well. SPEAKERS
Marc Chavez, Technical Director for Content, Deltek
Marc is experienced in all aspects of architectural practice especially architectural project management, specification writing, material research, and quality assurance. He also has extensive knowledge in renovation and restoration architecture, healthcare, and higher educational facilities. A Fellow of the Construction Specifications Institute, Marc serves as Deltek-Avitru’s Technical Director for Content. He is the point person for the development and continuous improvement of Avitru’s new content management system and other aspects of Avitru’s work that intersects with new and ongoing future technology integrations. A proponent of Lean Construction techniques and a systemic approach to sustainable community development, he participated in and achieved accreditation under USGBC’s new Resiliency program “RELi” in the spring of 2019. He continues is interest in Resiliency.
Mark Chubb, Senior Fire Analyst, Code Unlimited
Mark is an experienced fire engineer, fire chief, and emergency manager with more than 35 years of executive and technical experience in the design, construction, and regulation of buildings. As a fire chief and emergency manager in the USA and New Zealand, Mark worked closely with government officials, utilities, and businesses to develop disaster mitigation, response, and recovery plans for their communities. He has served as an incident commander for complex, large-scale incidents as well as an EOC manager responsible for coordinating regional response and recovery efforts to disasters lasting days, weeks, and months. As a fire engineer, Mark has participated in code development as well as application, interpretation, and enforcement to secure a safer, more sustainable, and resilient built environment. Mark is a fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers and a fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.
Mike Mariano, Co-Founder & Principal, Schemata Workshop
Mike Mariano is one of the two founding partners of the architecture practice of Schemata Workshop, located on Capitol Hill in Seattle. His personal and professional focus is on elevating the experience of living in and moving through the urban environment. Civic and personal well-being are intertwined, with thoughtful design helping to build social cohesion and community resilience. Mike brings extensive experience on a wide variety of complex projects for both public and private entities, and leads the firm’s project design & delivery process. Design at the firm is a synthesis of client program, goals, and objectives into a clear and compelling solution. We strive for an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach that engages the entire design team for high-performance buildings and communities. Mike is past co-chair currently serving on the executive committee of the Capitol Hill Ecodistrict, and current Chair of the AIA-Seattle Committee on Adaptation and Resilience.
Kyle Steuck, Structural Engineer & Associate Principal, Degenkolb
Kyle Steuck is a Structural Engineer and Associate Principal with Degenkolb. Kyle has consulted with local owners and multinational corporations to evaluate existing buildings and help develop criteria for improved seismic resilience. Kyle has also worked on a variety of seismic retrofit projects, often to meet customized performance goals. Kyle is active in the Structural Engineers Association of Washington (SEAW) and is the president of the Washington Chapter of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), whose mission is to connect multidisciplinary members dedicated to reducing earthquake risk.
Steve Dombrowski, Associate & Senior Accessibility Consultant, Endelman & Associates
Steven is an architect and accessibility consultant living in Seattle, WA. He is the former chair of Architecture for Humanity Seattle and the AIA Washington Council Disaster Preparedness and Response Committee. He is currently chair of the code committee and a member of Adaptation and Resilience. He believes architects can play a key role in mitigating the effects of natural disasters by engaging in preparations before catastrophic events ever occur.
