Fostering Our Ecosystems: Co-existence & Climate Resiliency

Now more than ever, we must recognize the deep interconnectivity of our existence.

Architects and allied professionals have an important role to play in stewarding environmental well-being at local, national, and global scales. How do we help foster climate resiliency for communities and ecosystems in the face of rapid environmental change? Who should we be learning from, collaborating with, and centering in this work as we consider the impacts? And what would it mean to design not just for humans, but for entire ecosystems?

This year’s climate summit will explore the application of co-existence and biodiversity frameworks to demonstrate how the built environment can facilitate whole ecosystem health. Through a full day of thought-provoking and dynamic sessions, we’ll explore actionable strategies to advance sustainability and actively support resilient, interconnected systems—now and into the future.

Join us on May 16, 2025 at PSE’s Auditorium for AIA Seattle’s 2025 Climate Summit: Fostering Our Ecosystems: Co-existence & Climate Resiliency (8 LU/HSW)!

Featuring: Julia Watson’s Opening Keynote Presentation

Julia Watson, designer, activist, academic, author, co-founder, Lo—TEK Institute | Julia Watson, Australian-born and of Greco-Egyptian descent, is a connoisseur of localized traditional ecological knowledge. She is the author of the Lo—TEK, Design by Radical Indigenism (Taschen, 2019), which showcases the soft, earth-based technologies of Indigenous peoples the world over, and the upcoming Lo—TEK Water (2025). Julia has traveled the world over to understand these technologies and respectfully share the messages of their makers with the world. Watson grew up in Australia, where aboriginal science and knowledge is not only acknowledged in the school system but systematically integrated into university curricula. She is thus driven to steer other nations towards properly respecting and integrating Indigenous knowledge into the “mainstream.” She studied landscape architecture at Harvard, taught for over a decade at institutions like Columbia, Harvard and RISD, cofounded the Lo—TEK Institute, which empowers generational wisdom through nature-based education and advocacy, cocreated the The Living Earth Curriculum and Digital Database, which uplift traditional ecological knowledge to enhance STEM programs, and runs a design studio in Brooklyn, New York, which provides strategic consulting and design expertise at the intersection of culture, ecology, and innovation.

VENUE + TRANSPORTATION

The program will be held at Puget Sound Energy’s Auditorium (355 110th Ave NE, 1st Floor, Bellevue, WA 98004) located in Bldg. A on the west side of 110th Avenue NE.

  • On-Site Pay to Park Parking Lot: Enter the underground parking garage from 110th Avenue NE, between NE 4th and NE 2nd Streets. Turn in at the small gray “PSE parking” sign at sidewalk height. You may park in any of the many unmarked spaces on levels P2 to P7.
  • Building Access From The Parking Lot: The parking garage serves two buildings. After noting the level and location of your vehicle, take the garage elevator farthest away from the ramps to building lobby. If you see a receptionist desk in the lobby, you are in Bldg. A, East Building (PSE is in Bldg. A). If there is a café and fireplace in the lobby, or you see street traffic, you are in Bldg. B, and should head east to Bldg. A.
  • Biking: There are 12 wave-shaped racks located on level P2 of the parking garage, with capacity for approximately 24 bicycles if stalls are double-parked.
  • Transit: The Bellevue Transit Center is located two blocks from the PSE Bellevue Office.
    • Sound Transit Express Bus Route 550 (serving Seattle and Bellevue) stops at the Bellevue Transit Center, just a 5-10 minute walk from PSE.
    • King County Metro RapidRide B Line (serving Downtown Bellevue, Overlake, and Redmond) stops at NE 10th St & 110th Ave NE, just a 1-2 minute walk from PSE.
    • Bellevue Downtown Light Rail Station provides access to multiple routes and is located a short 5-10 minute walk from PSE.
  • Rideshare: If using a taxi or ride service, use the GPS address of the taxi circle: 312 108th Ave NE, Bellevue WA 98004

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Demonstrate the critical role architects and allied professionals can play in ecosystem stewardship at local, national, and global levels.
  • Through project case studies, explore how designing for all forms of life (i.e. rewilding) can foster ecological well-being and biodiversity in urban environments.
  • Examine co-existence frameworks and draw connections between lessons learned from the people, partners, and communities that inform the impact of projects.
  • Identify practical methods to integrate ecosystems and urban design that respond to current and future climate conditions and support community resiliency and adaptation.
  • Examine the co-benefits of shared knowledge and community building practices that reduce climate risk, support the circular economy, and bolster environmental justice.
  • Discover how to be an advocate in climate for a decarbonized, equitable, and resilient built environment that allows future generations and ecosystems to thrive.
