Code Reload | 2021 Building Code Updates

This is the first session in the 2023 Code Reload Series presented by AIA Seattle’s Code Committee.

This two day program will provide an understanding of the changes between current 2018 IBC based codes and the new 2021 IBC based codes, including the codes as adopted by the City of Seattle. It will also go into how to interpret and apply key code provisions that apply to most buildings.

SPEAKERS

Richard Pellinger, SDCI Technical Codes Manager | Richard is the Technical Codes Manager with Seattle DCI. He is responsible for implementing technical policy and the Seattle Building Codes throughout the department. Prior to joining the City in 2007, Richard worked in Seattle with over 20 years of experience in building design and construction, including residential, mixed-use and commercial work. Richard serves on the AIA Codes Committee, the WABO TCD committee, and is a voting member for ICC Code Development. In addition, Richard is a graduate of North Dakota State University with a degree in Architecture.

 

 

 

Amedeo Gallucci, P.E, Bend Office Principal and Fire Protection Engineer | Amedeo Gallucci is a Fire Protection Engineer and Mechanical Engineer who began his career as a federal Trial Technician and Wildland Forest Fighter where he studied and worked with fire spread and behavior. Since joining Code Unlimited over five years ago, Amedeo has focused on managing risk for the built environment through structural analysis, equipment analysis, egress analysis, finite element analysis, and computational fluid dynamics. Amedeo’s advanced computer modeling skills and knowledge of fire and life safety regulations have been an asset to several notable education projects such as Oregon State University’s Cascades Building and Washington State University’s Vancouver Campus.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Gain an overview of the reason and the history of Code Adoptions.
  • Review core concepts and updates on occupancy classification, atriums, laboratories, and mass timber construction types, and many other aspects
  • Learn about changes to allowable heights and areas, fire resistance, fire ratings, and fire protection systems
  • Learn about transitioning from 2019 to 2022 based Codes as related to means of egress; and learn about forthcoming updates to the Seattle-specific codes and Seattle 2021 code amendments.
