Decoded | Seattle Land Use Roundup
This is the fifth session in the 2021 Decoded series presented by AIA Seattle’s Code Committee.
This course is meant to provide a framework for better understanding and using the Land Use code for projects in Seattle. Participants will learn how to navigate the Land Use Code and find relevant information for their projects. Participants will also learn about potential constraints and where Land Use Code overlaps with Building Code. Examples and a case study will be explored to help facilitate these learning objectives.

SPEAKERS
Skye Bredberg AIA, Senior Associate/ Project Manager | Skye is an Architect, Senior Associate, and Project Manager at Weber Thompson. She works on multi-family mid-rise and high-rise projects, ranging from 5-40 stories. Skye is a member of the AIA Codes Committee and is also a member of CREW (Commercial Real Estate for Women). She has a passion for the technical aspects of a project and oversees projects from early concept design through project completion.
Emily Lofstedt, Land Use Planner, Policy and Technical Team | Emily is a Land Use Planner with the Policy and Technical group at the City of Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI.) She has worked at the city since 2008 at both SDCI as a Zoning Land Use Planner, Permit Specialist and at the Parks and Recreation Department as a Planner. Currently her focus on the Policy and Technical team is to provide support and guidance to internal and external customers through the land use entitlement process.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Understand the entitlement process and timeline.
- Understand use of the SMC Title 23 – Land Use Code – navigation, helpful tools, where to find critical information, and basics on permitting and communication with SDCI.
- Understand use of the land use code – determining your buildable area and any constraints.
- Cross-pollination between the land use code and building code – examples of where the codes overlap and where either code may take precedence.
