Cross Laminated Timber w/ COTE
Critical Mass (Timber)
Mass Timber is a collective term for multiple existing (GLT, NLT, LVL, LSL) and emerging (CLT) structural wood products. In the broader category of mass timber, CLT (cross laminated timber) is notable because of unique product and process innovation. While much attention in architecture and engineering has been directed to professional practice application of CLT in existing project delivery frameworks, transformative opportunities for design exist in the vertical integration of supply chain (forest-to-frame) and prefabrication (BIM-to-FIM). The scale of this transformation exists beyond individual projects or firms and requires the development of a ‘critical mass’ of sustainable harvesting, manufacturing, shipping, and construction all held together by the glue of design and systems thinking – the realm of architecture and engineering.

Todd Beyreuther, PE | Director of Mass Timber | Katerra
Todd Beyreuther, PE is the Director of Mass Timber at Katerra, a startup that is redefining vertical integration in building design, engineering, manufacturing, and construction. Todd recently transitioned to Katerra from a research professorship at the WSU Composite Materials and Engineering Center to help drive collective adoption of mass timber in WA with public and private partners. Todd has a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Washington.
