Mass Timber's Heartwood Tour
Come tour and learn about the tallest mass timber building in Washington State – the Heartwood project currently under construction in the heart of Capitol Hill. This event will include a construction site tour followed by a presentation and discussion with the project team.
The tour and discussion will be led by atelierjones (architect), Swinerton (general contractor), Timberlab (mass timber specialist and installer), and DCI Engineers (structural engineer). As the Owner and Developer, Community Roots Housing, Skipstone and Dali Development assembled and led this fully integrated and visionary project team. Discussion will center around the design of 67,000 SF workforce housing project, as well as building code implications, team coordination, detailing, manufacturing, prefabrication, and construction.
The project is designed with a mass timber structural system, from locally sourced, sustainably harvested timber. The groundbreaking eight-story, 126-unit project will utilize the new Type IVC mass timber building codes, which Susan Jones helped to craft as part of the ICC Tall Wood Building Committee from 2016-2019. The project development was also supported by a generous USFS/Wood Innovation Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Participants will need PPE for the walk and are strongly encouraged to bring their own: hard hats, safety glasses, high-vis vests, and sturdy closed-toe shoes.
- Waiver: Attendees must print the Heartwood – Visitor Waiver and bring the completed, and signed, form to jobsite office in order to be admitted onto the tour.
- Accessibility: This live, in-person construction tour is presented by AIA Seattle’s Mass Timber committee. There will likely be accessibility challenges for the wheelchair bound on the tour due to ongoing construction activities on the site. There will be a portable restroom available on-site. Following the construction tour, the group will walk or take other form of transportation to the event space, which will have accessible restrooms on-site.
- COVID Safety: At this time, masking in any indoor spaces is recommended, though it is not required.
