Mark’s work in fire protection, code consulting, and code development spans four decades. Mark’s work with architects, engineers, construction managers, general contractors, and building owners focuses on solving complex problems arising from the intersection between building regulations, innovative design, and new technologies. He has lead Code Unlimited’s work with clients utilizing mass timber, employing alternative energy systems, and developing laboratory and workplace projects for high technology companies. Mark has been a member of the Seattle AIA Code Committee and currently serves as the committee’s co-chair with Skye Bredberg. Mark has given presentations at several Code Committee seminars. Mark is also an active participant in the Racial Justice Working Group, which developed the Culture Change in Practice seminar series for firm leaders. Mark is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in urban studies and planning and fire science. He holds a master’s degree in public policy from the Victoria University of Wellington. Currently, Mark is a fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers and currently serves as chairman of the Institution’s board of directors and trustees.

WHY ARE YOU INTERESTING IN SERVING ON THE AIA SEATTLE BOARD OF DIRECTORS?

AIA Seattle is the most active and visible advocate for inclusive design in our region. The chapter’s members are thought leaders in the profession nationally and internationally. In my tenure as an AIA committee member and co-chair, the dedication of chapter members to social justice, environmental justice, sustainability, and resilience have made a powerful impression on me. Beyond the groundbreaking work they do for clients every day, Seattle AIA’s members and committees are actively engaged in efforts to address the affordable housing crisis, create more inclusive spaces for people of every age and ability, and use design to inform just culture and addresses persistent inequities. As an allied professional, I am inspired by these efforts and eager to empower others in the design and construction industry to embrace these efforts alongside AIA Seattle members.
