Join us for Kristian Skovbakke Villadsen's 15-Minute Cities for People, the opening keynote of AIA Seattle's 2021 (Virtual) Housing Innovation in the 15-Minute City.

AIA Seattle presents Housing Innovation in the 15-Minute City, the kick-off event of AIA Seattle’s new series, 15-Minute Seattle: Creating Livable Places for All. Join us online, June 7-8, 2021 to examine the concept of complete neighborhoods as an urban design framework, and explore how Seattle can support full-service neighborhoods by providing a mix of housing options for homeowners, renters, and people of different ages and walks of life. The program will open with Kristian Skovbakke Villadsen’s keynote presentation, 15-Minute Cities for People.

From missing middle to infill housing, new housing designs and careful planning around existing communities can provide the density to support amenities such as restaurants, services, work opportunities, transit, and green spaces – all within a 15 minute walk from home. This keynote presentation will set the stage for the larger forum, introducing the 15-minute city concept and centering neighborhood design around the people living there, present and future.

15-MINUTE CITIES FOR PEOPLE | KRISTIAN SKOVBAKKE VILLADSEN

Monday, June 7 | 10:30 – 11:30am PT | Opening Keynote

Kristian Skovbakke Villadsen, Partner, Director, Gehl | Kristian Skovbakke Villadsen is Partner and Director at Gehl. Kristian works every single day to identify the potentials that can solve our cities’ challenges on the road to a more humane and sustainable future – towards cities that invite for sustainable behavior. Kristian lives in one – and actively promotes 15-minute cities. Kristian led the strategy for Shanghai’s riverfront development, and has also co-authored the first Chinese “street design guideline” in Shanghai. He is at the forefront of a number of masterplans urban development ant urban revitalization projects across Northern Europe and acts as a trusted advisor to a number of developers and cities. Kristian is in an ongoing dialogue with cities, car manufacturers, micro-mobility providers and public transport providers reflecting on and strategizing the future of mobility. In addition, he sits on an Advisory Board for IBA Stuttgart 2027 and he teaches urban development. In 2018, Kristian received the Shanghai Magnolia Award for his “outstanding contributions to Shanghai’s economic construction, social development and foreign exchanges.”

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Introduce the 15-minute neighborhood urban planning concept as a framework for building equitable, sustainable, and healthy communities.
• Learn about the critical ways that housing policy and design form the foundation for neighborhoods that connect residents to opportunities, provide for basic needs, and enable active lifestyles.   
• Learn about people-centered urban design and identify the ways in which housing and urban planning policy decisions can incorporate the needs of existing communities to address the risk of displacement.
• Identify the ways that housing design can help to combat climate change by promoting active mobility and car-free lifestyles.
