NWW: Wood Product Tour Field Trip

The Wood Product Tour Field Trip will be limited to 20 AIA members. We will observe framed and engineered lumber production, a presentation about cedar products and tour a prototype CLT building. The tour includes: 1. Sierra Pacific Industries with a focus on modern manufacturing of lumber, sustainable forest and mill practices resulting in 100% fiber utilization. Tour will include a discussion of sustainable forest practices, manufacturing and power generation using waste. A representative from Windows manufacturing will also be on hand to answer any questions about Sierra Pacific Windows. 2. Pacific Woodtech with CEO/President Jim Enright and VP of Sales and Marketing Dan Semsak including a brief presentation on how LVL is used. Attendees will tour an LVL factory and learn about veneer grades and processing to make structural LVL used in Residential both single family and Multi-Family construction in North America. Key highlights will be: • Veneer receiving and grading. • LVL layout and pressing. • LVL billet processing. • Overview of QC procedures at PWT to insure quality and grade. 3. “Lunch and Learn” at Calico Cupboard in Mt. Vernon with Paul Mackie, Western Area Manager for the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association. His presentation will include Red Cedar characteristics, product grades and sizes, installation, finishing and maintenance. 4. Mt. Vernon School District Jefferson Elementary School for an inside look at a cross-laminated timber prototype. This model is for school districts to have a more permanent affordable option to portable structures.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Gain knowledge of modern manufacturing of lumber, sustainable forest and mill practices, quality control and material evaluation.

  • Learn about LVL vaneer grades and processing, layout and pressing, billet processing, and quality standards, grading for specifications, and material evaluation.

  • Understand the properties and performance characteristics of Western Red Cedar, grade and product specification requirements, versatility, and proper installation, finishing and maintenance.

  • Learn about project management related to CLT construction, best utilization for sustainability, and options available for flexibility in design and availability.


COST

Includes 5 LUs (HSW) and lunch with choice of sandwich. Veggie options available.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Wear long pants and jobsite style shoes (closed toe, no sandals or heels) for walking over 1.5 miles and on catwalks while touring a lumber manufacturing facility. Hardhats, safety glasses and earplugs will be provided as needed. Attendees are also welcome to bring their own.
