CoHo: Understanding Homelessness (Lecture 2)
Understanding Homelessness is a lecture series that invites homeless service providers to talk about their experiences working both with and for those in our community that are living without permanent shelter. Architects often see homelessness through the lens of housing, but by providing first-hand accounts from service providers who are on the front lines of this issue, this lecture series aims to bring practitioners closer to the lived experience of real people that are living unsheltered. Rex Hohlbein will talk about the work that his organizations, Facing Homelessness and The BLOCK Project, have been doing to change the narrative around homelessness and provide transitional housing.
Speaker:
Rex Hohlbein
Founder & Creative Director, Facing Homelessness
A Seattle native, Rex ran a successful residential architectural firm for 30 years. In 2010, after befriending several men experiencing homelessness along the Fremont canal, Rex started a Facebook page to raise awareness for those living unsheltered through the sharing of photos and personal stories. Today, that Facebook page has over 51,000 followers, becoming a thriving and inspirational non-profit, Facing Homelessness. Rex now combines both architecture and community outreach in starting a social justice architecture firm, BLOCK Architects, with his daughter Jenn LaFreniere.
