Behind the Vision: AIA Seattle's New Location

Announcing AIA Seattle’s New Location!

After two years of many members’ engagement in multiple taskforces and leadership decisions, we’re excited to share with our 10-county community that we have officially identified our new location.

AIA Seattle is relocating to Smith Tower, Seattle’s iconic original skyscraper in Pioneer Square. Moving to Smith Tower meets the evolving needs of our community, demonstrates a commitment to our mission and values, and embodies our aligned vision with Seattle Design Festival for a culture of design for equitable, resilient, thriving communities.

As we’ve shared since fall 2023, the partners in the current Center for Architecture and Design decided not to renew the lease at 1010 Western, which launched the AIA Seattle Board’s multi-year effort to consider options that meet strategic needs of our member and stakeholder community for the next 5-10 years.

Smith Tower aligns with the qualities required for our community, including fiscal reliability, timing for the move, and criteria for the space such as accessibility, a high level of sustainability, proximity to transit, and walkability/rollability. Additional property considerations met by Smith Tower are the natural light, alignment with the values of AIA Seattle and SDF, safety, and architectural significance.

Smith Tower is a historic landmark with character. Opened in 1914 as Seattle’s first skyscraper, it features the original Otis elevators, rich neoclassical architecture, and storied spaces like the Observatory, as well as distinctive, flexible spaces for use by our community.

What’s next:

  • Move timing: We’re planning to relocate in October, with space planning in process.
  • Current site exit: Stay tuned for communications from AIA Washington Council and Seattle Architecture Foundation as they share their relocation plans. AIA Seattle is committed to responsible reuse and reallocation of materials and items, and will share details in the weeks ahead on how the Center partners manage leaving our current space.

Stay tuned for more updates as we communicate information as we have it available. We are prioritizing thoughtful use of staff and volunteer time to keep our timeline on track for our move. We can’t wait to share our new space in 2026!

We will be gathering for a Closing House Party with our partners Seattle Architecture FoundationAIAWA, and Seattle Design Festival on Friday September 26Register to join us for a farewell to 1010 Western Ave.
