DESIGNING ACROSS CULTURES Navigating Expectations in Asia and the USA
Join us for a thought-provoking forum where two architects and one landscape architect with extensive experience in Asia and the USA will share their insights on the cultural aspects of designing buildings in different countries. Our speakers will explore the unique challenges and opportunities of working in diverse cultural contexts, including China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, India, and the USA. Through case studies and personal anecdotes, they will discuss how cultural differences impact design expectations, user experience, and project success. Attendees will gain valuable knowledge on how to navigate cultural nuances and deliver effective, culturally sensitive design solutions in a globalized architectural practice. 2 AIA LEARNING UNIT CREDITS
Kun Lim, Assoc. AIA, Principal Designer of Kun Lim Architect in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and President of Kun Lim Studio LLC in Seattle, boasts a diverse portfolio spanning mixeduse, multifamily, commercial, athletic, campus, worship, medical, recreational, and township planning projects across Asia and the United States.
Scott Melbourne, PLA, ASLA, is Founding Principal at MxM Landscape Architecture and AIA Seattle board member. He earned a Master in Landscape Architecture with distinction degree from Harvard University Graduate School of Design and BLA from University of Washington. Scott spent over a decade based in Asia, first as a practitioner in Shanghai and then as an assistant professor at the University of Hong Kong.
Darren Chang, RA, AIA, is the Founding Principal of Darren Vinci Architecture and board member of the Harvard Club of Seattle. He was previously a project leader for two commercial developers in NYC and a designer at firms including KPF and OMA. Darren holds a Master in Architecture I from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, dual Master’s degrees in Aero/Astro and Systems Engineering from MIT, and a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University.
