Mass Timber: UW Health Sciences Education Building + Founders Hall Tour
The tour will start at 1:30pm at the University of Washington’s new Health Sciences Education Building (HSEB). The HSEB is centered on “A Culture of Care” and is embedded in all aspects of the building design – dappled and lush outdoor moments, a textural and reflective building skin, warm wood, cross-laminated timber (CLT) ceilings and legible and generous vertical circulation. A daylit library, student study and collaboration space line the north “active edge” of the building, while larger-span classrooms, skills and anatomy labs are positioned to the south. An inter-professional commons or “heart” perches over a pocket park and future water view corridor. The four-story facility is the first project to be built on the south campus of the university’s Seattle location under the new Campus Master Plan.
Founders Hall is the latest addition to the Michael G. Foster School of Business at University of Washington. The 84,770 GSF building replaces MacKenzie Hall on the same site, and includes classrooms, program offices, event spaces, and amenity spaces to augment the highly-successful PACCAR and Dempsey Halls. Founders Hall aims to revitalize the campus core by framing the northeast edge of historic Denny Yard while supporting Foster School’s vision and goals. It is a design-build project with Hoffman Construction and LMN Architects, and is a first significant mass timber project for the University. By decoupling from fossil-fuel based campus utility tunnel and by creating a high-performing envelope, the project achieves 79% reduction in EUI and 88% reduction in operational carbon against 2030 baseline. Use of heavy timber resulted in 58% reduction in embodied carbon against concrete baseline, and the project is expected to achieve LEED NC v4.1 Gold rating upon completion in summer 2022.
Attendees must fill out and bring this liability form to the tour in order to participate.
**Joseph Mayo of the Mass Timber Committee will be onsite with extra copies, as well.
This tour is unfortunately SOLD OUT.
This live, in-person construction tour is presented by AIA Seattle’s Mass Timber committee. While the elevator will be operational, there will likely be challenges for wheelchair users to be on the tour due to ongoing construction activities on the site. For the HSEB there are accessible restrooms available in Hitchcock or J-Wing. For Founders Hall, there are accessible restrooms inside Dempsey Hall, where Hoffman’s site office is located in Room 124. At this time, University of Washington strongly recommends masking in any indoor spaces, though it is not required.
Please indicate on your registration if you would like to be contacted regarding specific accommodations to fully participate in this program. Contact Connor Descheemaker, Member Engagement Manager, with any questions or concerns.
