Code Reload | Code 101 & Workshop

This in-person seminar will focus on a broad overview of the 2021 IBC to present the basics of how the code is organized and used.  The seminar will also include a hands-on workshop focusing on Chapter 5 Allowable Areas and Area Increases, as well as Chapter 10 Means of Egress.

This is the fourth and final session in the 2023 Code Reload Series presented in joint collaboration by AIA Seattle’s Code Committee and the Young Architects Forum (YAF).

The program will be held at Puget Sound Energy’s Auditorium (355 110th Ave NE, 1st Floor, Bellevue, WA 98004).

  • Puget Sound Energy is located on the west side of 110th Avenue NE

On-Site Pay to Park Parking Lot:

  • Enter the underground parking garage from 110th Avenue NE, between NE 4th and NE 2nd Streets. Turn in at the small gray “PSE parking” sign at sidewalk height.
  • You may park in any of the many unmarked spaces on levels P2 to P7.

Building Access From The Parking Lot:

  • The parking garage serves two buildings. After noting the floor and location of your vehicle, take the garage elevator farthest away from the ramps to building lobby. If you see a receptionist desk in the lobby, you are in Bldg. A, East Building (PSE is in Bldg. A). If there is a café and fireplace in the lobby, or you see street traffic, you are in Bldg. B.

Speakers

Ana has over a decade of experience as a licensed architect, contributing to the design and delivery of several nationally recognized sustainable multifamily buildings in Seattle.  She has dual advanced degrees in architecture and construction management from the University of Washington.

Leonard has over 40 years of experience in the field of architecture, starting with many years as a retail specialist but eventually developing a practice area in designing mission critical technology facilities.  Leonard worked with several Seattle area firms for many years before establishing his own firm in 2014 to focus on the design of data center and other types of technology related facilities.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the fundamental process of creating, revising, and adopting building codes
  • Develop proficiency in navigating the building code by gaining a foundational understanding of its organizational structure and the content within each chapter
  • Master the ability to calculate and document allowable building areas, heights, number of stories, and allowable area increases, showcasing compliance with chapter 5 of the building code
  • Develop proficiency in assessing a building’s adherence to Chapter 10 Means of Egress, encompassing evaluation of travel distances, restrictions on common path of travel, separation of exits, and the creation of a comprehensive Code and Life Safety Plan
