Our domestic and international work consists of architecture, urban design and interiors, sustainability consulting, and industrial design projects with a focus on ‘deep green’ regenerative design. The firm is anchored by Jason F. McLennan, founder of the International Living Future Institute, and Partners Christine Lintott and Dale Duncan, with a combined vision to integrate environmental and social regeneration through net zero, living building and socially just work. The ideal candidate should have passion, commitment and enthusiasm for these broad concerns and be equally capable to explore them.
McLennan Design, Inc has offices in the City of Bainbridge Island, Washington, Kansas City, Missouri, and in the City of Victoria, British Columbia. Prospective employees would be located ideally in the Seattle area, although remote locations are possible.
Prospective employees must be willing to work remotely with the firm partner’s and the project teams in each of these offices and work on projects in multiple locations. Post COVID-19, travel will likely be a requirement of this position.
The RDC / Building Science Specialist provides project-level sustainability consulting for the practice working under the direction of the firm’s partners and in collaboration with Phaedra Svec, the Director of Regenerative Design for McLennan Design and senior staff. The position entails building science consulting and research in a variety of categories including energy modeling, passive systems, low-impact materials, site and building systems integration, and the potential for productivity, health and wellness improvements. The position also requires building science modeling and analysis in the support of an integrated design process, including but not limited to energy parametric modeling, energy life cycle cost analysis (ELCCA), natural ventilation modeling, daylight modeling, embodied carbon analysis and water/waste systems modeling although we acknowledge that candidates might only be familiar with some subset of these. This building science specialist is accountable to uphold the firm’s performance standards, process, vision, and commitment to regenerative design, living buildings, and transformative design work. The RDC / Building Science Specialist is responsible for the consistent delivery of the highest quality of sustainable analysis, documentation, consulting expertise, and the professional services required to support this level of work.
The RDC / Building Science Specialist must have proven project leadership, communication skills and experience guiding clients through the highest levels of regenerative design. This individual will need to demonstrate an emphasis and understanding of ‘deep green’ sustainability practices. ‘Deep green’ experience is represented by leadership with Living Building Challenge work, LEED and other green building systems. This individual must demonstrate knowledge in multiple areas of ‘deep green’ consulting, utilizing a variety of tasks ranging from materials research to energy performance consulting. The RDC / Building Science Specialist must demonstrate an ability to guide multiple project teams at once.
The RDC / Building Science Specialist must have advanced knowledge of building performance analysis software, computer drafting, including the capability to work with 3-D computer models in Revit and parametric modeling tools such as Grasshopper and/or Dynamo. Although not specifically required graphic design to produce concept design deliverables and slide decks for presentation to clients, are all highly regarded skills for this position. The RDC / Building Science Specialist position requires collaboration, clear communicators, team building, and leadership. The RDC / Building Science Specialist will need to be able to act independently and make timely decisions.
Strong writing skills and the ability to compose compelling presentations are essential. The RDC / Building Science Specialist must have the ability to think strategically and have demonstrated strong process skills for consistent delivery of thorough and high-quality sustainable design documentation, as well as familiarity with all project phases. The RDC / Building Science Specialist will be responsible for organizing and assisting to lead sustainable design eco-charrettes and workshops.
RDC / Building Science Specialist Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership: Must encourage and participate in firm wide collaboration about issues related to regenerative design analysis and documentation, as well as partner with leadership on initiatives to enhance the quality of the firm regenerative design process.
Client Interaction: Must have the ability to interact comfortably and confidentially with clients, consultants, and other project members. Must have demonstrated the ability to understand and respect the values and objectives of clients, as well as their goals and constraints.
Office Culture: Must work together with leadership to foster innovation, creativity, and collaboration in ways that create the best possible environment for effective and creative project design and delivery and must work to build trust and team cooperation among office staff.
Knowledge, Skills, and Education
The RDC / Building Science Specialist role requires a professional degree with experience in all phases and aspects of projects. Advanced knowledge of ‘deep green’ sustainability and regenerative design is required. Strong parametric analysis, spreadsheet and word process skills and a current knowledge of Revit, InDesign, Adobe, and Power Point are also required. Professional registration is desired, but not mandatory.
Experience in the sustainable design industry and an understanding of the Living Building Challenge, LEED, GreenStar, Nabers, WELL Building Standard and other green building systems is a requirement for this role.
Industry level knowledge in a sub-set of areas is desired, but not mandatory, including: Climate Positive Planning, Biophilia, Biomimicry, Green Materials Selection and Specification, Embodied Carbon, Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, Water and Waste Systems, Permaculture, Passive Heating and Cooling and more.
Credited Publications and Thought Leadership is desired.
The RDC / Building Scientist shall have a minimum of 6-8 years of experience in the profession, post-graduation from an accredited institution with technical training in engineering and/or building science.
