The offices of McLennan Design, Inc are located in the City of Bainbridge Island, Washington, Kansas City, Missouri, and in the City of Victoria, British Columbia. Prospective employees ideally would be located in the Seattle area, although remote locations are possible.
The Mid-Level / Designer 1 Architect provides a mid-level of project leadership for projects, working under the direction of the firm’s partners and senior staff, and in support of the lead architect for the project. This person is accountable to uphold the firm’s performance standards, process and vision, committed to developing the highest level of regenerative and living building, transformative design work. They are responsible at the project level for the consistent delivery of the highest quality of design documents and professional services to support this level of work.
The Mid-Level / Designer 1 must have proven project architecture skills and experience working with sustainable design projects. They must be detail-oriented and have the ability to think strategically and must have demonstrated strong process skills as it applies to the consistent delivery of thorough and quality design documents as well as administering all aspects of projects during each phase of the work. The Mid-Level Designer 1 must be skilled in developing conceptual computer models and renderings for presentations to the clients and other stakeholders.
The ability to lead project team members on their projects, motivating them to do their best work without doing it for them is essential. Mid-Level Designer 1 Architects must be collaborators, clear communicators, team builders and leaders. They are responsible for their independent actions and decisions and must have the ability to coordinate and mentor less experienced staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership: Mid-Level / Designer 1 Architects must encourage and participate in firm wide collaboration about issues related to design document production as well as partner with leadership on initiatives to enhance the quality and efficiency of design document production.
Monitor Quality: Mid-Level / Designer 1 Architects are responsible to ensure that the quality of design document production on their projects meet the firm’s standards as defined by the leadership.
Document Storage: A Mid-Level / Designer 1 Architect is responsible to maintain, organize and archive all project related design documents during and after the project.
Project Coordination: Mid-Level / Designer 1 Architects must be well-rounded architects with an understanding of all aspects of project design, documentation and construction. They must have the ability to coordinate the work of the project’s production team, including the project’s consultants, as well as the construction services team.
Timely Work: Mid-Level / Designer 1 Architects must have the ability to plan the effective use of their time and coordinate the schedules of others to set and consistently meet project deadlines.
Client Interaction: Mid-Level / Designer 1 Architects must have the ability to interact comfortably and confidentially with clients, consultants and other project members. They must have demonstrated the ability to understand and respect the values and objectives of clients, as well as their goals and constraints.
Office Culture: Mid-Level / Designer 1 Architects must work together with leadership to foster innovation, creativity and collaboration in ways that create the best possible environment for effective and creative project design and delivery. They must work to build trust and team cooperation among office staff.
Knowledge, Skills and Education
The Mid-Level / Designer 1 Architect role requires a professional degree with experience in all phases and aspects of projects. Advanced knowledge of project design, construction documentation/delivery methods and construction materials is required. Strong spreadsheet and work process skills are also required. Previous supervisory experience is required. Professional registration and NCARB certification is desired but not mandatory.
Experience in the sustainable design industry and developing a full understanding of the Living Building Challenge is a requirement for this project role.
Experience with multiple design tools and the development of computer models and renderings to convey conceptual design ideas is a requirement for this project leadership role. Computer skills should include knowledge and experience working with AutoCad and Revit, Lumion, 3D Max, Rhino Drawing, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, and InDesign.
Mid-Level / Designer 1 Architects shall have a minimum of 6-8 years of experience in the profession, post graduation. They shall have demonstrated experience in large projects. The ability to participate in multiple projects at once is desired.
