McLennan Design, Inc has offices in the City of Bainbridge Island, Washington and in Kansas City, Missouri.  Ideally the individual would be located in one of our office locations, but fully remote working may be possible. Regardless of location, prospective employees must be willing to work remotely with the firm partner’s and the project teams in each of these offices and work on projects in multiple locations. Travel is likely required for this position.

Position Summary

The Regenerative Design Consultant (RDC) provides leadership level regenerative design consulting for the practice and project level working under the direction of the firm’s partners and in collaboration with Phaedra Svec, the Director of Regenerative Design for McLennan Design.  This person is accountable to uphold the firm’s performance standards, process and vision, committed to developing the highest level of regenerative and living building, transformative design work. The RDC is responsible for the consistent delivery of the highest quality of sustainable documentation, consulting expertise, and the professional services required to support this level of work.


An RDC must have proven project leadership, communication skills and experience guiding clients through the highest levels of regenerative design.  This individual will need to demonstrate an emphasis and understanding of ‘deep green’ sustainability and regenerative practices, including experience as a ‘deep green’ consulting leader in other firms.  ‘Deep green’ experience is represented by leadership with Living Building Challenge work, LEED and other green building systems. This individual must demonstrate an expert level of knowledge in multiple areas of ‘deep green’ consulting, utilizing a variety of tasks ranging from materials research to energy performance consulting.  The RDC would provide a level of experience and expertise utilizing the tools and managing a process to develop embodied carbon analysis for the firm’s projects.  The RDC would provide leadership for the LCA consulting services that McLennan Design would offer to prospective clients. The RDC must demonstrate an ability to guide multiple project teams at once.

Although not specifically required, advanced building performance analysis software, graphic design and computer drafting, including the capability to work with 3-D computer models in Revit, and to produce concept design deliverables and slide decks for presentation to clients, are all highly regarded skills for this position. The RDC will manage and guide additional team members in the research and development of detailed reports and presentations. It is essential that this individual be able to lead project team members and provide the motivation necessary for staff to do their best work without doing it for them. The RDC position requires collaboration, clear communicators, team building, and leadership. The RDC will need to be able to act independently, make timely decisions and exhibit the ability to coordinate and mentor less experienced staff.

Strong writing skills and the ability to compose compelling presentations are essential. The RDC must have the ability to think strategically and have demonstrated strong process skills for consistent delivery of thorough and high-quality design documentation, as well as administering all aspects of projects during each phase of the work. The RDC will be responsible for organizing and leading sustainable design eco-charrettes and workshops. It is very important that this individual is comfortable and effective at leading client presentations and managing the client and consulting teams through all project milestones.

RDC Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leadership:  Must encourage and participate in firm wide collaboration about issues related to regenerative design documentation, as well as partner with leadership on initiatives to enhance the quality of the firm regenerative design process.
  • Client Interaction:  Must have the ability to interact comfortably and confidentially with clients, consultants, and other project members.  Must have demonstrated the ability to understand and respect the values and objectives of clients, as well as their goals and constraints. Must demonstrate ability to make presentations to different client and stakeholder groups, and lead workshops.
  • Project Management:  Must participate in and support the Firm Partners’ preparation, negotiation, administration, and execution of project agreements. Must have project management abilities to help support the project cost control and profitability and assist in monitoring the quality of the design documentation.
  • Office Culture:  Must work together with leadership to foster innovation, creativity, and collaboration in ways that create the best possible environment for effective and creative project design and delivery and must work to build trust and team cooperation among office staff.

Knowledge, Skills and Education

  • The RDC role requires a professional degree with experience in all phases and aspects of projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of ‘deep green’ sustainability and regenerative design is required.
  • Strong spreadsheet and work process skills and a current knowledge of Tally, One-Click, EC23, Revit, InDesign, Adobe, and PowerPoint are also required.
  • Previous supervisory experience is required.
  • Professional registration is desired, but not mandatory.
  • Experience in the sustainable design industry and an understanding of the Living Building ChallengeSM, LEED, GreenStar, Nabers, BREEAM, WELL Building and other green building systems is a requirement for this project leadership role.
  • Industry leadership level knowledge in a sub-set of areas is required, including, Climate Positive Planning, Biophilia, Biomimicry, Green Materials Selection and specification, Embodied Carbon, Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, Water and Waste Systems, Permaculture, Passive heating and cooling, Daylight Modeling, Natural Ventilation Modeling, Energy Modeling and more.

Credited Publications and Thought Leadership is desired.

Senior level RDC shall have a minimum of 10 years of experience in the profession, post-graduation from an accredited institution.
