SMR Architects is a 36-person, full-service architecture firm established in Seattle in 1977 as Stickney & Murphy Architects. We pride ourselves on employing the best in our profession who are passionate about community design, historic preservation, and social and environmental sustainability. Over our 43-year history, SMR Architects has emerged as a leader in the fields of affordable housing, historic preservation, and sustainable design. Our practice is grounded in a belief that all people deserve enduring, high-quality design.
For us, architecture is not just schematics and specifications; it’s about the people who ultimately use and inhabit the buildings we design. At SMR, we create living spaces; our structures provide a place for life to happen as they enrich, anchor, and interact with the neighborhoods of which they are a part.
Our work is frequently honored both locally and nationally for its exemplary contribution to affordable housing design. Most recently, SMR was recognized with the 2019 Urban Land Institute’s Jack Kemp Excellence in Affordable and Workforce Housing Award for Plaza Roberto Maestas, the 2019 Judges Special Award of Excellence from the Gold Nugget Awards for Cosecha Court II, the 2018 Gold Nugget Grand Award for Best Affordable Housing Community (60 – 100 dwelling units/acre) for Hoa Mai Gardens, and the 2017 AIA/HUD Secretary’s Creating Community Connection Award for Plaza Roberto Maestas. SMR Architects also was recognized with a 2017 Friend of Housing Award by the Washington State Housing Finance Commission for exceptional contributions to creating and supporting affordable housing.
SMR’s office is located in Pioneer Square, an expression of our appreciation for the value that historic structures provide to the character of our community. For more information on our firm, please visit www.smrarchitects.com.
