Schemata Workshop

Schemata Workshop, founded in 2004, is a minority and woman-owned architecture and urban planning practice providing high quality, full architectural services to public and private clients on new and renovation projects. As a staff of fourteen, we are experts at efficiency, problem-solving, and working to each individual’s strengths. Unlike larger firms, our size means we are nimble and quick to accommodate changes. We are expert listeners, incorporating community input at every step of the process, and prioritizing their needs while seeking sustainable, future-oriented design solutions. We bring our diverse backgrounds and expertise to each project, unified by our shared dedication to our values. These values — equity, sustainability, accessibility, community health, and livability — are instilled into every project.

Our principals are hands-on, actively working on projects from beginning through completion. They bring a high level of knowledge and expertise to every project, while providing leadership and mentorship. This approach has allowed us to successfully tackle many sizes and scopes of projects – from 110 units of transit-oriented affordable housing in Capitol Hill, to a neighborhood-wide affordable development in Port Angeles, to an accessible gathering space for the community of Burien.

Our staff includes two LEED Accredited Professionals, and we are well-versed in Evergreen Sustainable Development Standards, and the Living Building Challenge Program. We integrate a holistic community-based approach to sustainability that stretches beyond certifications and is specially tailored for each project.

Community engagement is central to our mission. We are renowned for our ability to amplify diverse stakeholder voices through the design process, cultivating a feeling of ownership and community investment in each project. We strongly believe in the necessity of accessible, healthful, affordable housing for all.

Schemata Workshop is a registered Minority/Women Business Enterprise (MWBE) in the state of Washington. Schemata Workshop recently renewed our JUST label from the International Living Futures Institute: a “nutritional label” for companies that value transparency and social equity. In 2017 we became signatory to 100% Talent, a gender equity initiative for King County. In 2016, Schemata Workshop was the recipient of the Minority Small Business of the Year Award from King County Executive for leadership in business transparency and social equity.
