McNelis Architects

McNelis Architects is an award-winning, woman owned firm. Although our work centers around our home base of Seattle, our staff has experience with projects in multiple parts of the country and the world including Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and Russia as well as Idaho and Montana.  Founder Lisa McNelis comes from 30 years of experience in firms in Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, and Seattle. We bring a world view that contributes to considerate designs that are unique and appropriate. We enjoy guiding clients through the whole confusing process.

Themes in our work include a strong connection to the outdoors through use of natural light, curated views, and volumes. In response to our Pacific Northwest setting, we look for the opportunity to create “outdoor rooms” in the belief that light, fresh air, and movement have ties to well-being. Whenever possible, we bring the work of artists and artisans into our designs. We strive to achieve an exterior and interior architecture that is unique, innovative, and sensitive to each client’s budget.

Our process starts with a conversation. It may be on the screen, the phone, or face to face. Then a meeting at your house, site, or building. We will present you with a proposal specific to your project that outlines our services and fees. Through it all, we listen. We listen to your ideas, goals, needs, and wishes. You don’t have to know exactly what those are at the outset. We will help you determine what is possible. Ultimately, through our expertise, talents, and experience, your dreams are brought to life.

It is important for us to be stewards of the environment as well as our client’s budget. To that end, we strive to design spaces that remain beautiful and useful throughout their lifespan. We believe that well-designed spaces will contribute to the well-being of their occupants.

We strive for the “Elegant Solution”, a concept referred to in problems of mathematics, engineering, and programming; maximum effect is achieved with the most efficient or simplest effort. But simple is misleading. In Architecture, the process of discovery and refinement takes rigor to achieve simplicity and surprising impact.
