Urban Design Forum: Urban Walk + Talk Series: The Tropics and the Built Landscape

This session is part of the AIA Urban Design Forum’s Urban Walk + Talk Series and features Verónica Ortiz and Carlos Puerta, founders and directors of AEU Arquitectos (Medellín, Colombia). The discussion explores international urban design practice with a focus on dense urban environments, tropical contexts, and place-based, climate-responsive design strategies. Drawing from AEU Arquitectos’ work across public architecture, urban space, and cultural infrastructure, the presentation highlights The Tropics and the Built Landscape, a project recognized with the 2023 Silver Award for Urban Design & Architecture. The project demonstrates how pedestrian-focused interventions, public space activation, and holistic urban strategies can support equitable, resilient, and livable city centers. The session invites dialogue on interdisciplinary collaboration and the role of urban design in responding to complexity, density, and local social conditions.
