All applicable BUILT submitters are required to complete the Common App to the best of their ability. To qualify for the Energy in Design Award\, the submitted project must meet the 2030 Challenge criteria or better. The Common App raises awareness of the Framework for Design Excellence and is a revolutionary opportunity to move toward design that supports climate action. Use thePerformance Statement to describe how sustainable design strategies elevate design excellence and the impact of your project! \nSpecial thanks to the UW Integrated Design Lab and sponsor BetterBricks for their partnership on the Energy in Design Award. \n\nDESIGNING A VIBRANT FUTURE\nEvery year\, jurors praise submissions that clearly communicate the project story. What concepts and considerations drove the design? How did the design team creatively address the project parameters and client goals? What benefit or impact does the project create for its occupants and for the larger context? Ultimately\, what makes this an award-winning project? We encourage submitters to use the project narrative\, captions\, and the inclusion of process work as opportunities to graphically tell a design story. Submit to start a dialogue with the jury.   \n\nJURY CONSIDERATIONS\nIn addition to the jury’s own criteria\, the AIA Seattle community has identified four considerations for the submission review process: \n\nInspiration | How does the project manifest its stated intent–in form and function–revealing innovation in both thought and practice?\nProblem-solving | How does the project creatively address challenges inherent in its site\, budget\, program\, materials\, collaboration\, and context? What are the organizing principles informing design?\nEnvironmental Sensitivity | How does the project exhibit serious intent to minimize negative environmental impact and enhance its relationship to the environment?\nSocial Impact | How does the project engage the community in which it is situated? How does it help promote a vibrant\, equitable\, and just community?\n\nWe invite submitters to carefully consider how the jury will interpret one or more of these jury considerations in connection to the project’s design story. \n\nQUESTIONS?\nPlease refer to the FAQs page before contacting the team with any additional questions. \nQuestions about Submitting? Contact Senior Programs Manager\, Zoe Guckenheimer \nQuestions about attending the Live Event? Contact Senior Programs Coordinator\, Andrea Aguilera \nSponsorship Questions? Contact Development Manager\, Zee Mars \n\nTHANK YOU TO OUR 2024 HONOR AWARDS SPONSORS\n \n\n\n\n  \nInterior Tech | Berger Partnership | Cairncross & Hempelmann | CBIZ Berntson Porter\nCoughlin Porter Lundeen | Dowbuilt |  Fsi Engineers | GLY | Hoffman Construction Company\nKPFF Consulting Engineers | Lane Powell | Magnusson Klemencic Associates\nMalsam Tsang Structural Engineering | MR. | Sazan |  Schuchart | Schultz Miller | Swenson Say Fagét\nQuantum Consulting Engineers\, LLC | citizenM Pioneer Square | Fremont Brewing \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Equity Through Transitions: Managing Layoffs with Gender and Race in Mind
DESCRIPTION:In the ever-evolving landscape of architectural practice\, equitable management practices are essential to fostering an inclusive environment. This event focuses on the disparities in representation within practice management and related fields\, offering insights and strategies to promote equity and inclusion at all levels of a firm. \nParticipants will delve into critical areas of practice management\, including staffing\, sponsorship\, pathways to leadership\, and retention\, all viewed through the lenses of gender and race. The event will explore how these factors influence layoff decisions and outcomes and provide toolkits for implementing best practices. \nThe intent of this program is to critically analyze gender and racial statistics within the profession\, examine these key areas in practice\, and learn an actionable toolkit designed to improve awareness and reduce the lasting harm of layoff decisions. By the end of this event attendees will gain practical knowledge to help ensure that layoffs are conducted equitably\, ultimately contributing to a reduction in gender and racial disparities within the profession.  \nPending approval – continuing education credit (2 LU | HSW) \nPlease register for the event below: \n \n  \n  \nDate: Wednesday\, September 18th\, 2024 \nAddress: Center for Architecture and Design (CfAD)\, Address: 1010 Western Ave\, Seattle\, WA 98104 \nSchedule:  \n\n5:00 – 5:30 pm: Door opens\, happy hour before the event\n5:30 pm: Program starts\n7:30 pm: Program ends\n\nCovid/Masking: AIA Seattle recommends masking at our programs as a demonstration of community care. Evaluate and assess your firm’s existing practices\, values\, and culture\, and discover strategies for fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment to enhance the overall trajectory of the industry at a critical moment. \n3. Identify actionable steps to create an inclusive workplace in the AEC (Architecture\, Engineering\, and Construction) industry that embraces equity and diversity in terms of race\, gender\, ability\, age\, sexual orientation\, and more\, rather than focusing on an individual firm. \n4. Reflect on how equity\, diversity\, and inclusion contribute to the public good. \nCEU approval pending for the event. Can gentrification be inclusive and equitable? How is technology transforming mobility? How is city housing policy manipulating the private market? What will the new waterfront look like without the Viaduct? \nAnyone with thoughts regarding topics\, speakers or a particular curiosity regarding urban design in our region is welcome to join us and weigh in on the focus for the upcoming forums in 2023. What is our role in bringing about a thriving future? How can our design solutions address ecological and social needs and what new collaborators bring additional wisdom to the design table?   \nYou play a vital role in showcasing the visionary design and impactful projects in our region and beyond\, and we encourage you to share your work by submitting to AIA Seattle’s 2024 Honor Awards for Washington Architecture. Here are some of this year’s highlights:  \n\nWe encourage submitters to celebrate the people and places that shape their projects by showcasing the role of all collaborators that contribute to the vision and impact of these projects. \n\n\nYou’ll see that we’ve updated the information requested for the Energy\, Carbon\, and Water measures in the 2024 Common App for Design Excellence as AIA Seattle continues to advocate for and demonstrate solutions to climate change. All BUILT submitters are required to complete the Common App to the best of their ability and convey their approach to sustainable design.  \n\n\nWith your feedback\, we’ve revamped our approach to Project Tours as part of the Jury Process. Read the Project Tour Guidelines to learn more!  \n\n\nWe invite you to join colleagues to celebrate outstanding design and strengthen our amazing community. This year’s Live Event is on Monday\, November 4 at Town Hall Seattle\, and we can’t wait to start the party at 5:30pm! \n\nEvery project is part of a larger interconnected system and provides an opportunity to enhance and improve the whole. As architects\, we occupy a unique and powerful position in this effort\, shaping the future of our region and participating in the evolution of our communities through the process of design.    \nOn behalf of the Honor Awards Committee and AIA Seattle\, we invite you to consider how your project moves us in the direction of designing a vibrant future.
