Washington State Clean Buildings Act 101

AIA Seattle COTE's 2023 focus on existing buildings

Washington State passed the Clean Buildings Act in 2019 with the goal of reducing energy consumption, operating cost, and carbon emissions from existing buildings which account for 27% of emissions statewide. Within the bill, the Clean Buildings Performance Standard sets energy performance targets for various building types, which go into effect beginning in 2026. Luke Howard from the Department of Commerce will be presenting on the bill and breaking down the requirements for compliance. Luke has decades of experience in building performance with Washington State University and was the Technical Lead for the Standard. We will also be joined by Jennifer Ewing from the City of Bellevue. Jennifer is the Environmental Stewardship Program Manager with the City and will give us a first hand account of their proactive approach to improving their portfolio of buildings performance based on the Standard. Their presentations will be followed by a moderated Q&A session, so please bring your questions! The event will be held in person at Sazan Group’s offices downtown, with an option for virtual attendance.
