UDF: Community Impacts of Urban Greenspace

Panel conversation and audience discussion covering the impacts of greenspace on  wellness & violent crime reduction in our urban areas.

Mardelle McCuskey Shepley will discuss observations that have been developed from nation-wide research on urban greenspace. Including direct impacts on our communities as a whole, as well as cumulative behavioral impacts to us as individuals.

Charles Cross will bring insight from the Detroit Collaborative Design Center community-based development model in the Detroit metropolitan area, sharing inspiring examples of empowering residents to shape their urban spaces via direct community engagement.

Andy Sheffer will share his experiences operating and enhancing the abundant greenspaces we have in Seattle provided by Seattle Parks and Recreation, covering both challenges and opportunities for Seattle Parks related to the work of Mardelle and Charles.

Andy Sheffer, Director of Planning and Development, Seattle Parks and Recreation
Andy Sheffer is the Deputy Superintendent of Operations at Seattle Parks and Recreation and a Landscape Architect. Formerly the Director of Planning, Development and Maintenance, Andy’s charge was to come full circle on Asset Management by completing major maintenance projects that informed scheduled preventative maintenance. Early in his career, Andy taught large scale grading and drainage design at the University of Washington and worked at several design firms with a passion for creating landforms that interacted with vegetation to create a sense of place.
