In lieu of a typical meeting, join Mass Timber from 3:00-4:30 pm PT for Embodied Carbon in Mass Timber at 3 Different Scales: Building, Product, and Forest.
Do you want to better understand mass timber and its relationship with carbon and sustainability? This panel discussion tracks carbon and mass timber through three different scales: jumping from building scale to product stage, and ultimately back to forests. Three experts in each of these areas will discuss carbon within a mass timber building, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of wood building products, and implications to our forests and sourcing with an increased use of mass timber. Please come learn about mass timber and pathways for tracking carbon and sustainability. The session will conclude Q&A and discussion.
- Edie Sonne Hall, Ph.D., is Founder and Principal of Three Trees Consulting, a Seattle-based consulting firm specializing in forest and product carbon accounting and forest sustainability and ecosystem services. Edie will discuss research from a recent study, “From Frame to Forest: Mass timber impacts on forest quantity and quality.” She brings science and systems thinking to develop sustainable forest sector strategies and policies at the state, regional, national, and international level. - Maureen Puettmann, Ph.D., is Director of Operations of CORRIM, Consortium for Research on Renewable Industrial Material. Based out of Corvallis, OR, Maureen is a national expert in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of wood building products and will detail the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of building components, their associated environmental impacts, and carbon storage potential.
- Alex Zink is an architect at Miller Hull and is their in-house expert on mass timber, providing guidance on a variety of project types for how to successfully and cost effectively implement mass timber. Alex will discuss a case study on carbon for a 2-story mass timber public project. Alex has a strong passion for and knowledge of sustainable design solutions to help the AEC industry address climate change.
