The Dirty Dozen Compliance Issues for the Fair Housing Act
Apartment construction is booming in the Pacific Northwest. This half-day seminar will focus on clarifying the application of various standards (FHA, ADA, UFAS, IBC / ANSI) to multi-unit housing design. While the standards for accessibility compliance are essential for design professionals to understand, they can also be somewhat complicated and confusing. Using reference photos and on-the-fly sketches, this interactive session will address solutions to the “Dirty Dozen”, which are some of the most common issues in multi-unit housing accessibility compliance, and share how these specific issues relate to the broader field of design.
At this first session in our Beyond Codes series we’ll be joined by accessibility expert William E. Endelman. The presentation will also include a discussion of new scoping areas that may impact attendees’ projects and provide a risk management perspective.
- Participants will be able to define and apply accessibility standards, including FHA, ADA, UFAS (Section 504), 2012 IBC / ICC A117.1-2009, and WA State / Seattle Amendments.
- Participants will be able to design in compliance with the Fair Housing Amendments Act and technical standards per the Fair Housing Act (FHA) Design Manual / referenced ANSI A117.1 “safe harbor” for multi-unit housing.
- Participants will be able to design in compliance with the requirements of 2010 ADA Standards and the ADA Technical Standards as applicable to multi-unit housing, leasing offices and mixed-use design.
- Participants will be able to identify common design and construction mistakes to avoid in FHA, ADA, & Code accessibility compliance, as well as solutions for remediating compliance issues.
