Code Download | Deep Dive: IBC Chapter 7

This is the second session in the 2025 Code Download Series presented by AIA Seattle’s Code Committee.

Fire and smoke protection features described in Chapter 7 of the International Building Code establish minimum requirements for passive fire protection. These features seek to limit the impact of fires on occupants and the structure by preventing the spread of fire and smoke within and between buildings.

Fire and smoke spread within a building can expose adjacent areas that have different hazards, occupancies/uses, and/or occupants/tenants to dangerous and/or unanticipated conditions; these conditions can increase the overall hazard to life, increase the scale of the initial incident and/or result in conflagration to adjacent properties. Day 1 of this seminar will focus on the organization, content, application, and intent of Chapter 7 requirements. Participants will be presented with common situations in which the requirements apply. Day 2 will focus on novel situations and the application of alternative approaches to the prescriptive requirements and tested assemblies, including requirements for engineering judgments.

Join us online on July 22 and July 23, 2025 (12-2pm each day) for Code Download | Deep Dive: IBC Chapter 7 (4 LU/HSW). Register below and look for information regarding online event access in your confirmation email.

This is a 2-day program. Participants must attend the live webinars both days in order to receive continuing education credit or a certificate of completion. No partial credit will be awarded. All registration and credit questions can be directed to Andrea Aguilera.

MEET THE SPEAKERS

Andy Lianto, Senior Fire Protection Engineer, Jensen Hughes | Andy has over thirteen years of experience providing fire protection and life safety code consulting on complex engineering projects by identifying critical code issues and implementing innovative solutions. His experience also includes performance-based designs and modeling, smoke control system designs, project management and site inspections. His projects include commercial real estate, residential, aviation, transportation and industrial of both new and existing buildings

Elizabeth Graves, Fire Protection Engineer, Jensen Hughes | Elizabeth (Ellie) specializes in life safety, building and fire code consulting; fire alarm/fire sprinkler system design; passive protection applications and engineering judgements; and fire-stopping inspections. Ellie has used her experience and background of national and local codes to complete fire protection design and review of new and existing buildings, code compliance plan reviews during design development, property conditions assessments, and evaluations of existing facilities throughout the country.

Mark Chubb, Sr. Fire Protection Engineer, Special Projects Lead | Mark Chubb is a former AIA Seattle Code Committee co-chair and current member the AIA Seattle board of directors. He formerly chaired the board of directors of the Institution of Fire Engineers and served as the Institution’s technical director. Over a career spanning more than 40 years, Mark as worked as both a consulting engineer and code official. He participated in the development of the International Codes as a staff member for one of the legacy model code groups. He also has extensive experience working with performance-based codes in Australia and New Zealand. Mark will address code flexibility from the perspective of code officials or authorities having jurisdiction.

Walker Donuji, Market Leader, Senior Consultant, Jensen Hughes |  Walker has over two decades of first-hand experience ensuring fire safety compliance in transportation, civic/government, assembly, commercial real estate, residential, medical and research buildings. His current responsibilities include project management and quality review, fire protection and life safety consultation, building/fire code interpretation and development, smoke control system consulting, and performance-based design strategies.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Describe the process by which the fire resistance of assemblies is determined through fire testing and how it differs from testing of structural elements.
  • Identify the six methods of demonstrating the fire and smoke resistance of fire assemblies.
  • Identify and summarize the seven types of fire and smoke-resistant assemblies and their applications.
  • Describe the required methods of protecting openings, through-penetrations, joints, duct and air-transfer openings, and concealed spaces in fire and smoke resistant assemblies.
  • Discuss the application of prescriptive fire-resistant assemblies and calculated fire resistance as alternative to tested assemblies.
  • Explain the process for seeking and employing engineering judgments in the approval of fire and smoke resistant assemblies.

ACCESSIBILITY

  • This program will be conducted via Zoom Webinar, with closed captioning enabled. Visit the Zoom Accessibility Guide to learn more about leveraging accessible features on Zoom.
  • All sessions will be recorded for later viewing and will be accessible to registered attendees for up to a year after the session concludes.
  • Presenter files and other program materials (as applicable) will be available on the password-protected attendee resources page at least 1-2 business days before the session begins. The password will be sent in follow-up email communications to all registered attendees.
  • We encourage speakers to create accessible presentations to ensure attendees can fully engage with the session content.
