Road to Code | Topical Issues in Residential Design

This is the fourth and final session in the 2022 Road to Code series presented by AIA Seattle’s Code Committee.

This two day presentation will explore current trends and issues associated with designing under the Seattle Residential Code. Day 1 will cover substantial alterations definitions and enforcement/Fire walls in lieu of substantial alterations. Day 2 will cover loft typology/AADU and DADU design/Building configuration impacts.

SPEAKERS

Richard Pellinger, SDCI Technical Codes Manager | Richard is the Technical Codes Manager with Seattle DCI. He is responsible for implementing technical policy and the Seattle Building Codes throughout the department. Prior to joining the City in 2007, Richard worked in Seattle with over 20 years of experience in building design and construction, including residential, mixed-use and commercial work. Richard serves on the AIA Codes Committee, the WABO TCD committee, and is a voting member for ICC Code Development. In addition, Richard is a graduate of North Dakota State University with a degree in Architecture.

 

Moderator: April Bottman-Haase, SDCI Permit Process Leader | April Bottman-Haase is a Permit Leader at SDCI and has worked at the City of Seattle since 2019. She is a subject matter expert for the Seattle Residential Code and voting member for the 2023 ICC Code Hearings. Prior to joining the City of Seattle, April worked in the architectural field for over 15 years as a project architect and designer on project types ranging from small residential, institutional, to transit.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Participants will be able to identify substantial alterations triggers and incorporate the appropriate requirements into their project scope.
  • Participants will understand how to utilize a fire wall in lieu of substantial alterations.
  • Participants will learn about current, local trends in AADU/DADU design.
  • Participants will become familiar with the different loft typologies and requirements
