Hello AIA NWW Members!
Thank you to everyone who helped make our 2023 AIA NWW Design Awards a success! Over 70 people join us in the Social Lounge at Hotel Leo to celebrate local architecture in an evening of community and connection.
|
This year, six firms from the AIA NWW section representing Whatcom, Skagit, Island, and San Juan Counties submitted 21 projects for award consideration. Our jury, Cynthia Richardson, AIA Emeritus, Eric Gu, PhD, Regional Director of WoodWorks, and Joe Clark, from Architectural Elements, selected eight projects for recognition.

From the north entry, the 1st floor ramps down through the north classroom wing, and the central “knuckle”. Moving west are classrooms, the main entry, and administration. The second-floor organization is similar to the first floor, with the stacking of classrooms at the north and southwest, the central “knuckle”, and the library above the admin area at the southwest with a view to Cornwall Park.

The original Glenning School in Lynden, WA was built in 1881 and demolished when a new replacement school was built. The 150,000 sq. ft schoolyard is in the middle of Lynden, surrounded by single family homes and endeared by the community as an open playfield. This land was surplused by the School District and put up for sale to anyone. The City, and numerous community donors, were able to assemble the funds to acquire the land to preserve it from development and create a public park in 2019. The Glenning Park Master Plan Design charrette process achieved a unanimous support for the final design layout integrating all comments.
