Design in Public Announces New Associate Director Katherine Wimble

New position will build bridge with public to increase design awareness

February 14, 2013 – Design in Public, a non-profit strategic initiative of AIA Seattle, welcomes Katherine Wimble as its new Associate Director. Katherine will be working to further Design in Public’s mission of advancing Seattle’s livability through design. Her work over the next year will focus on a theme of Design in Health, through programs including a Design in Health Summit, a design competition, and the annual Seattle Design Festival.

Katherine brings a background of landscape urbanism, fine art, graphic design, and environmental sciences to a passion for sensitive design for people in public space. Prior to joining Design in Public, Katherine worked on a wide variety of urban design projects as a Landscape and Communications Designer at Hapa Collaborative in Vancouver, BC. Her Master’s degree education in Landscape Architecture at the University of Washington included a four-month internship with world-renowned urban quality consultants Gehl Architects in Copenhagen, Denmark. Prior to earning an MLA, she worked as a Visual Communications Manager and Executive Assistant at Peace X Peace, a Washington, DC-based non-profit organization connecting women peace-builders around the world.

Katherine also holds a Post Baccalaureate Graduate Degree in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a B.Sc. in Forestry and Wildlife Resources from Virginia Tech. She has served as a Peace Corps volunteer working with environmental NGOs in Krakow, Poland and as an Animal Behavior Enrichment volunteer at the Auckland Zoo in New Zealand. Katherine also creates site-specific, public art installations as a founding member of The Unearth Collective.

Design in Public is dedicated to growing a city that embraces design to create a healthier, more livable community. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded by AIA Seattle to demonstrate the value and relevance of design in public life. We believe that design is a profound way of thinking and working that can address real, complex, systemic problems in the public realm. Our programs include lectures, exhibits, research, case studies, and the annual festival. Learn more at www.designinpublic.org.
