Livable Communities

Improving the quality of design in our urban centers, both large and small, is critical to the livability, sustainability and economic health of our region. Through advocacy, AIA Seattle will seek to improve the regulatory environment that impacts design and become a known resource on urban design issues. Compact, walkable communities are better for people and leave space for nature. Great design is an essential component of good compact communities. Architects are experts on people-centered sustainable design, and the AIA can help you access the great resource architects offer.

AIA SEATTLE ACTION AGENDA 2008

  • Levies: support Pike Place Market Levy and advocate its acceptance to member voters
  • Training: Train a core group of members to successfully participate in relevant boards and commissions, answer media inquiries about the design of great places, and write Op Eds and letters to legislators.
  • Design Review: Identify design review board positions in AIA Seattle’s area that have openings for architects, and place trained AIA members in those positions
  • Quality Growth Caucus: Contribute as a founding partner of the new Quality Growth Caucus, and support the legislative priorities of the caucus.
  • 2009 Levies: explore support of upcoming Seattle Center Levy Awards program: establish a program to award or recognize clients for great design in compact communities
  • Tools for architects: develop a presentation on good design models for compact communities, and prepare AIA members to make presentations at community meetings
