How it all happened:
With the Board of Directors committing early in 2004 to reinvesting in the Pike Place Market streetfront, a 1960sqft space originally occupied in 1981 and last remodeled in 1991 (establishing the Resource Center for Architecture), work commenced in earnest beginning in March.

Throughout Spring 2004, teams of emerging professionals conducted programming exercises including interviews of the AIA Seattle staff and other users of the space, held a series of design charrettes, and developed concepts for presentation. Working with YAF CoChairs Kjell Anderson Associate AIA and Chris Davidson Associate AIA, AIA Seattle President-elect Peter David Greaves AIA and Treasurer Teresa Rodriguez AIA have functioned as client representatives. Greaves notes, "The teams have worked hard and well, and produced some elegant solutions that respond to the challenges of accommodating AIA Seattle's burgeoning programs and operations. We appreciate the energy and artistry of all participants."

In a historic twist, Studio Meng Strazzara - where Chris Davidson works at his 'day job' - has made the project a learning experience for the staff. In the early 1980s when AIA Seattle moved from Seattle's Pioneer Square to its present location on the edge of the Pike Place Market, Eric Meng AIA designed the multi-level interior spaces that housed the operation for a decade. A 1991 remodel by Mithun reconfigured the space to capitalize on the streetfront site and created the much-visited Resource Center for Architecture (as cited in Architectural Record 7/04: "Bridging the Divide Between Architects and the Public," by Sam Lubell).

Attendees at the AIA Seattle Annual Meeting May 19 viewed the results of these design labors, and considered the spatial future of AIA Seattle. "We'll turn to our design and building industry allies to help us materialize the vision these emerging professionals have put before us," advised Teresa Rodriguez.

After Labor Day 2004, work got under way to build the new space. In late August, demolition of the existing interior configurations moved the AIA Seattle team further along toward reanimation of the AIA Seattle storefront space at 1911 First Avenue. The excitement about a refreshed environment for AIA Seattle activities began to mount in early April, when design teams from the Young Architects Forum presented two schemes for the next generation of the AIA Seattle space.
AIA Seattle office functions relocated beginning in early July, to quarters at 2300 7th (at Bell) generously provided by Arai Jackson Ellison Murakami.

On November 19, AIA Seattle departed AJEM and begin to occupy the newly refreshed quarters – operating online and by phone only through the Thanksgiving break and until December 8.

The AIA Seattle Board of Directors and staff welcomed all AIA Seattle Members to view the newly-finished space at the GRAND ReOPENING/HOLIDAY PARTY celebration December 8, 2004!
